Birdwatching

There is a wealth of places to see a huge variety of birds whilst staying at Hawthorn House. Lots of birds can be seen from the bedroom & sitting room windows. We have lots of suggestions of where to go, but D&G Birdwatching Guide (pdf) is a great start. The Caerlaverock Reserve Warden has written this excellent guide

Cycling

With unspoilt scenery, mild climate and quiet roads to explore, this is a perfect place to cycle.  Tim is a fair weather cyclist & can suggest a number of routes you might try.  There are  several signposted routes here in the Machars.  If you want something more adventurous, two of the 7stanes cycle routes of  Gentrool and Kirroughtree are nearby

Gardens

The wonderful mild climate means there are some really amazing gardens to visit around the Rhins and Machars.  There is a Gardens of  Galloway Route scheme which gives information on many of the gardens you can visit.  All of them are well worth a visit!

There is also a list of other gardens & nurseries here.

Golf

We are not golfers, but friends say this is one of the best areas for golf they know.  Huge variation in courses, difficulty and design. The closest course to Hawthorn House is St Medan, a tricky 9 hole course - details here There are at least 3 others within a half-hour drive.

A guide to all the courses around and about can be found here

Fishing

We fish from our sea kayaks in the summer for mackerel, so we know the sea fishing is good.  You can fish from the shore or rocks almost anywhere around the coast.  If you prefer, join one of the boats that take parties further out.  Avante is based in the Port, or Isle Adventures from Isle of Whithorn.

For Fly fishing  information have a look here

Other Things to See & Do

There is so much to see in this area it's impossible to list everything... here is a good list of Activities and a very good page of Historical Sites & Museum

The nearby towns of Whithorn. The Book Town of SW Scotland Wigtown, then further afield Newton Stewart and Stranraer have good websites giving lots of information.

You really will be spoilt for choice whilst staying with us!

Walking

We have a large collection of walking guides, books and maps.  So if it's just  a quiet stroll, or a full on expedition to Cairnsmore or Merrick, we can help you decide.  We've done lots of the walks and will be honest about how easy or hard they really are! A good place to find a walk to suit you is here .
